Confessions of a car salesman

This is a really insightful read. They hired a new writer, and the guy went undercover for a few months to see what it’s really like to be a car salesman.

This is sad

I know we’ve talked about making a food composter. Maybe we ALL should. This is disturbing, knowing all of the places in the world that does not have access to even basic nutrition.

“You’d never know it if you saw what was ending up in your landfill. As it turns out, Americans waste an astounding amount of food — an estimated 27 percent of the food available for consumption, according to a government study — and it happens at the supermarket, in restaurants and cafeterias and in your very own kitchen. It works out to about a pound of food every day for every American.”

PSA: catalytic converter theft epidemic

Interesting article and news to keep your eye on. Pretty sad what some people will do for a little money.

“Forget the rims, and never mind the stereo. Modern thieves looking for a serious payoff are skipping the obvious old staples and crawling underneath your car in search of the real prize: the catalytic converter.”

irresponsible banks, gullible borrowers

All we hear these days is whining from reckless home borrowers and their banks.
But did you know that renters are 32 percent of American households? And that homes in foreclosure are less than 2 percent?
So why is Congress rushing to bailout high-flying borrowers and their lenders with our tax dollars?

I know that more than just myself are concerned with this government bailout of banks and borrowers. I’m no economist, but I found angryrenter.com had some very interesting information. It may be somewhat biased or extreme, but it makes its point clear and gets people talking and thinking.

Shipping container data centers

I know a few architects around the world are working on designing living spaces to use these over abundant shipping containers, but this is a neat concept as well. These things can be had fairly cheap ($1,500 or so, but possibly more as of late with the rising cost of steel) and this is yet another great idea to recycle. Shipping containers modified to be data centers.

another company that has utilized this trend is Freitag. Their office consists of shipping containers stacked on top of each other. The picture is below, and feel free to read about them and visit their site. Their bags are wonderful.

blu-ray sales down?

According to this article sales of Blu-Ray standalone players dropped 40% from January to February.
Another article states it may be a seasonal thing, or that the standards war itself has turned users off to next gen movie tech.
I think it may have more to do with the fact that now that there is only one true standard, people know that the price can only go down from here as more manufacturers start building players with cheaper components and higher production volumes. I’m sure most customers remember how DVD players went from $500 to $49.99 Wal-Mart specials in a matter of 24 months (didn’t look up that data, so don’t flame me if it’s wrong).
